Booking guide: How to find airline tickets, hotel, car rental and travel is written by Jens Skovgaard Andersen.

Use a travel agent for your booking

There are now many opportunities to look for hotels, airline tickets, travel and rental companies online, but that does not necessarily make it easier to figure out who to choose. We will also always suggest you go to one or more Danish travel agencies, there are experts in where you want to go - it may be that they have the whole package for you.

We also suggest that you sign up for ours newsletter. Here you receive travel offers, travel tips and much more.

But if you are curious about what you can find out there yourself, then here you get the editors' bids for some obvious places to check before you decide.

Best for airline tickets - Momondo

Our favorite is Momondo, as we believe they provide the best overview. Momondo has one map display function, which is good for you who would like to leave on certain dates but are open to the destination. They also have a new 'experience function', which provides good inspiration before you decide.

Momondo gives you an overview of both the cheapest, the most sustainable and also the best departures, where both price and travel time are assessed together. It is rare for Momondo to overlook an airline connection or an airline. The only thing that is not entirely accurate is their price indicator; it is more indicative than actually usable, so double check the price yourself.

The newsletter is sent out several times a month. See our data policy here.

Get a free stopover on the way via 'choose yourself'

By using the 'choose yourself' function when you apply for a flight ticket, you can select departures and airports yourself, so that you can, for example, avoid waiting times at night. Sometimes you get a free stop on the road for up to 1-2 days. The trick is to select its route, do a search and then click 'select yourself' in the bar above the search results.

Subsequently, you sort the travel time in the search result by clicking on the word 'duration', and then you can see what options there are. Often you get up to 15-20 hours somewhere on the road, which can be enough to experience an exciting city. You can even move the cursor to see how long a stopover you can get on the trip.

This will typically be cheaper than buying an extra stage separately, as you do with the 'round trip' function, as the long transfer time means that the ticket is often sold cheaper. You may also be lucky enough to get a free night with the purchase from the airline for example in China or Dubai, if there is a long time between flights.

Search for more airline tickets

When you are looking for tickets that have one or two stopovers, it can be an advantage to check departure both all the way from the departure airport to the destination and also the individual routes separately. It can, for example, be from Copenhagen via Amsterdam to Curacao.

Then you can search for Copenhagen - Amsterdam and Amsterdam - Curacao separately. The prices of airline tickets are not always logical in terms of price. It may be cheaper to buy separate tickets instead, and it's worth a try.

This is due to the competitive situation between the airlines, which means that they, for example, often dump the prices on a single shorter route in order to earn the money on the long routes.

If you end up booking separate tickets, remember to give yourself plenty of time between departures. There may be delays, and you may risk losing the next flight ticket if you are unlucky.

The cheapest airline tickets are not always the best

It often pays to refrain to buy the flight ticket from the cheapest provider. There is usually only a few kroner difference between the unknown ticket provider and the established travel agency and the airline itself. In addition, you often get a much better service that can help make the whole experience better - not least if you end up having to cancel or change the ticket, or the airline moves around the times.

Therefore, keep a close eye on who you are going to book airline tickets with. On Momondo in each search result you can see the providers of the individual ticket. If you are in doubt about a provider, it may be beneficial to google the company before making a booking. As an established Danish travel agency, Kilroy Travels, for example, has a far better service than sites like Kiwi.

Momondo also has hotels and surprisingly many, so you might as well check it out at the same time when you buy tickets and make your booking here.

Expedia - best for package deals

Our favorite in package solutions is Expedia. They are 100-meter champions in packages with airline tickets, hotel and car rental combined. They have a wide selection and so their website works easily and efficiently. In addition, they also have many user reviews from those who have actually been to their hotels, so it is worth checking out.

A good piece of advice is to double-check the suggested hotels on one of the other search sites to make sure it is a hotel of the quality you would like to book. It happens that Expedia suggests hotels that do not necessarily have the best ratings around, but as long as you are aware of that choice, it is still an excellent place to book package deals.

Best for hotels - Booking.com

There is really a lot of competition on hotel search, however Booking.com is our favorite. With an excellent overview of hotel options in different price ranges, areas and styles, it is one of the best places to start.

It is easy to find family rooms, which is an option that other booking sites do not always have. Their map and filter function makes it easy for you to find what you are looking for. Just like on Expedia, Booking.com also displays user reviews so you can read more about others' experiences with the hotel. The more user reviews a hotel has, the more you can count on them to provide a comprehensive picture of the hotel.

Remember to make your booking well in advance if you would like the hotel at the cheapest rate. Many hotels offer free cancellation until shortly before arrival, so you can often guard the weekend and book extra without burning anything inside. Remember to check the terms before you finally book.

You can also wait to book the hotel for the day itself or shortly before, which is a bit risky if you have chosen a particular hotel. Many hotels dump the price at short notice, so there can be a lot to save that way if you want to take the chance.

Below we have listed several websites where you can also look for your next hotel:

  • Momondo is perfect for providing a comprehensive overview of hotels around the world.
  • Trivago.dk collects the prices from many different hotel booking sites, and you can therefore see who has the best price.
  • Hotels.com also gives a really good overview. A tip is to check the prices several times, as we have experienced that they fluctuate a lot.
  • Hotel is a slightly overlooked site that occasionally has other hotels. Try their 'Nature' search filter.
  • Agoda are good for Asia. One tip is to disregard unrealistically high upfront prices and correspondingly unlikely discounts and instead just look at the real price before you decide.
Tents, views - travel

Best for hostels and alternative accommodations

TripAdvisor is our favorite here. It covers an incredibly wide range both in terms of affordable accommodation in eg hostels and also for more special accommodation places that provide some other travel experiences. It also works best on a computer / laptop, as you then get all the options. And then we also like that there are so many user reviews.

One tip is to take the reviews with a pinch of salt. Or two. Look at trends in the reviews, such as the fact that there are many who mention the location or noise. And if there are many very positive reviews from reviewers with few reviews, they will often be fake. Therefore, look for what the senior reviewers with 50+ reviews write.

Unfortunately, you can not filter by how many reviews the reviewers have made, but you can filter by those that have given 2, 3 and 4 stars, and then you often get the fake reviews removed from the owner's cousin, who has given 5 stars, or the competitor who has given 1…

There are also other options if you specifically go for apartments and houses; Wimdu og AirBnB. The latter in particular is quite well known, but it is also our experience that the service has often become too expensive to use if you only have to be there for a short time, or if you are only 1-2 people, because their fees have increased in step with their celebrity factor. But check the final price yourself.

Best for booking a classic sun holiday

There are several good options here, and you can often find both better and cheaper solutions than you yourself would be able to book from home. Besides the known as TUI og Spies we can recommend Hideaways and the lesser known Eliza was here, both of which specialize in finding small cozy hotels in Southern Europe away from mass tourism.

You know, the kind of hotels you always hope to find by driving to the nearest village and seeing what there is. The difference is just that now you can find the hotel from home.

They also offer both package solutions, where there can be airline tickets, hotel and car included in the price. It is easy sun holiday without all the other tourists.

Best for ski holidays

The ski holiday market is another area with a lot of opportunities. We can recommend Sunweb, which despite their name has a lot of opportunities in skiing. With them you can choose the mode of transport yourself, and they cover many ski areas.

Best for booking special trips

There is a large and exciting market for special trips in Denmark, and gradually there are a number of agencies, each with their own strengths. We would always recommend choosing an agency that has a special focus on where you want to go, or on just the type of travel you are looking for. But there are also elements such as time and price that come into play, so here it is just a matter of researching at travel fairs and here at RejsRejsRejs.dk.

remember that the agencies are covered by the Travel Guarantee Fund, and therefore it may be less important how big the agency is, as long as it is specialized enough in what you want.

Car booking - AutoEurope

Car rental is always a bit of a jungle. Both in terms of finding the right provider and also in terms of finding the right insurance policies. Our recommendation is to go for one of the slightly larger providers or to book through a Danish agency. Especially in Italy and Spain, there is a little too often cheating in the purchases of some of the smaller landlords, unfortunately. We can recommend Auto Europe, which is a global company that also rents out motorcycles and motorhomes and Momondo which has an excellent car rental overview.

Find all travel offers from Danish travel agencies here

They find the cheapest prices through all the established car rental companies, and despite the name, they rent in many parts of the world - not just in Europe. We have, for example, tried it ourselves in South America. Here you can also choose the insurance level. If you have proper annual travel insurance, 'Basic' should be good enough, but if you want to make it easy, you can simply opt for a 'Super cover'. Another good alternative is Danish Oscar Car Rental, which also covers a number of destinations outside Denmark.

No matter who you are looking for a rental car, camper or motorcycle with, consider whether it is not worth spending a few extra bucks on choosing a well-known company if you want to avoid surprises. It is too unfortunate to have to spend time and effort discussing small or large extra bills with a landlord on his trip.

Good luck finding airline tickets, hotel and car rental!
