A refrigerator full of musty food is not a fun surprise to return home to. So be sure to throw out the food that gets too old while you are away - or give it to your neighbor. You can also bake the banana cake you plan to make and take it with you to the airport. It is
sustainable and then you avoid food waste.
If you need to be really checked, it is a good idea to buy easy food for the freezer so you have something ready for the day you come home from your trip. It is not always possible to shop on the way home from holiday.

Thailand is waiting
empty the trashcan
There is nothing worse than coming home to the smell of musty garbage and a kitchen teeming with banana flies. So be sure to write on your travel checklist that you need to empty the trash before you set off on your journey. Especially bio-waste and residual waste are important to get emptied, as it smells bad after many days in a rubbish bin.

Check if you have any bills with payment date while you are away. If there are, be sure to get them paid or added to payment. You clearly will not get it done while you are away and there is no reason to come home for a reminder fee.
Once you have ticked it off your travel checklist, you also have a better overview of what you have available - and less hassle to get home to.

Take care of your plants
If you have animals, then you probably remember to find someone who will look after them while you are on holiday - but does the same apply to your plants? Be sure to find one that can take care of your plants so they do not die while you are away. You can possibly pay your neighbor with the banana cake you were going to bake anyway.

If you have regular appointments for cleaning, babysitting or anything else, make sure they know you are traveling. Then they do not come to visit in vain - it's good style. The same goes for newspaper subscriptions - remember to put it on pause, then you also save money.

Put a timer on yours
lily and a cross on your travel checklist
If you have the opportunity, put an hour on some of your lamps outdoors and indoors and set them to light for a few hours in the evening. That way, the house looks more inhabited and you reduce the risk of burglary.

Put an extra key with a good friend, neighbor or family member so someone can enter your home if needed. If a neighbor calls and says they see smoke or that there is a suspicious car parked, it is nice that there is always someone who can come in and check if everything is as it should be. It is therefore an important item on your travel checklist that will give you peace of mind when you are traveling.

Turn off streams
The next item on the travel checklist is about red standby lights. Turn off all your electrical appliances - except what is absolutely necessary. It saves power and reduces the risk of something short-circuiting while you are away. You often forget that your router for the Internet uses an incredible amount of power - and benefits no one while you are away. So unplug it, save money and avoid short circuits. It's good for the environment and your electricity bill.

Turn off the heat
Depending on how long you are away and what time of year you are traveling, set your thermostat. There is no need for the whole house to be heated if it is empty.
If you are going on a longer holiday, you can easily turn down the heat completely, as long as the house is just frost-free. If the holiday is a little shorter one of a kind, just turn down to a low temperature; you quickly get it warmed up again when you get home. Good for your wallet.

Set the alarm clock
Although a lot of preparation can be done well in advance, there is always something to be arranged on the day of departure. So make sure to get up well in advance. Set two alarms, preferably on both your mobile and an old-fashioned alarm clock, so you are sure to get up. It would simply be too annoying to be late because you have slept over.

Last tick on your travel checklist
Last but not least: Make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked before leaving the house. Go for a walk and check it all out - then you will not be sitting on holiday and will be in doubt as to whether you forgot to close the window in the bedroom.
Now is the last cross of your travel checklist, so you can leave safely. Good trip!
