Salzburg is Austria in top form: Mozart balls, The Sound of Music, the Alps - all in all, just Austria at its best.

Austria on the wish list - experience Salzburg on the way south

Austria is still a big favorite for Danes who like to ski, and therefore many take the trip to the Alps in the winter. But Austria is actually there for the rest of the year as well, and the country is a slightly overlooked summer destination.

If you take the car for example Italy or Croatia, then you're probably driving through Austria on the road. Here are many great places to take a break and refuel for the rest of the trip, but maybe you should consider more than a short stop. It is not only when you fly that you can take advantage of a 'stop-over' to have some great experiences on the way to something else.

The Austrian Alpine landscapes are ideal for hiking if you need to stretch your legs, just as there are cycle routes in many places - also along rivers where it does not go up and down all the way.

The cities offer impressive historical experiences and good old-fashioned cosiness with cold beers, excellent local wine or world-class cake.

About the travel writer

Jens Skovgaard Andersen, editor

Jens is a happy travel nerd who has traveled in over 60 countries from Kyrgyzstan and China to Australia and Albania. Jens is educated in China Studies, has lived in China for 1½ years and is a member of the Travel Club. He has extensive experience with the travel world as a tour guide, lecturer, advisor, author and photographer. And of course most important of all: As a traveler. Jens often goes to places where it is also possible to watch a good football match in the company of other incarnated fans and has a special fondness for Boldklubben FREM, where he sits on the board. For most people it is obvious to look up to Jens (he is barely two meters tall), and then he is a 14-time champion in the TV quiz Jeopardy and still single, so if you can not find him out in the world or on a football stadium, you can probably find him out touring in the Copenhagen quiz environment.
