Bangkok Hotels: 6 luxury hotels in the Sukhumvit area is written by Jacob Gowland Jørgensen. RejsRejsRejs was invited by Marriott. All opinions are, as always, those of the editors.

Bangkok hotels in the Sukhumvit area
In 2016, the company behind Marriott bought the Starwood chain, best known for its Sheraton hotels, making them the world's largest hotel operator.
In a world where tourism is just rising and rising, there is always a need for more hotel rooms, which means that Marriott is expanding by as many as 1700 hotels in the next three years. That's almost 300.000 rooms!
The editors had been invited to experience some of the many different ones types of hotels and brands which Marriott covers today, and for that purpose is Bangkok perfect. They are all located in the vibrant city of Bangkok Sukhumvit neighborhood, where the iconic SkyTrain runs.
We experienced a total of six Bangkok hotels, and we can already reveal that two stood out as favourites:
- Athenee Hotel, The Luxury Collection – luxury hotel in Bangkok
- Le Méridien Bangkok – one of the modern Bangkok hotels
- JW Marriott Bangkok – one of the classic Bangkok hotels
- Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit – old fashioned luxury in Bangkok
- Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok – for the younger target group
- The Westin Grande Sukhumvit – personal service

Athenee Hotel, The Luxury Collection
We started on Athenee Hotel, The Luxury Collection, which, like many other larger hotels, is located in the Sukhumvit area. However, Athenee Hotel is just around the corner from Sukhumvit itself, and next to the Patpong Night Market.
Even though we are still very much in the center of a big city, it seems like a more peaceful corner than up on Sukhumvit.
Athenee is a luxury hotel. The hotel manages to combine in a more modern way than many others high class with cosiness and functionality. There were so many well thought out details in the hotel room in terms of light and location. Along with an eminent king-size bed, I quickly fell asleep despite jet lag.
In the morning I slept so well that I did not reach a walk in the pool outside, but it looked fat.
On Tripadvisor, the hotel is at 4,5 / 5, which I totally agree with. The hotel also has perhaps the coolest address in town, as it is located on the “Wireless Road”!

Le Méridien Bangkok: One of the modern Bangkok hotels
The next hotel we visited was Le Méridien Bangkok. It is located in a small shopping street with many small shops.
The style is completely different modern, and very European in its expression, where there is light, air and art. The rooms are large, and seem very comfortable. On Tripadvisor, the hotel is also at towering 4,5 / 5.
We had a really good lunch in their restaurant before moving on to several Bangkok hotels.

JW Marriott Bangkok: One of the classic Bangkok hotels
In the evening we were to visit one of the classic Marriott hotels, JW Marriott Bangkok.
It is a classic 5 star hotel that is made to impress. It is located in the middle of the most urban-modern part of Bangkok, on Sukhumvit Soi 2, and the rooms shine with American luxury. This hotel also scores a towering 4,5/5 on Tripadvisor.
We ate at their New York Steak House, which has been recommended several times in the Michelin guide. There is no hint of Thailand in the food, but it was dendælme good anyway.

Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit
Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit is a so-called landmark hotel. It's also right in the middle of Sukhumvit at one of the big intersections so everyone knows where the Sheraton hotel is and it makes it nice and easy to find your way back after a walk.
I had been given a room on the 31st floor, and although Bangkok is getting taller, there is not much up in that height, so there was a great view.
For me, Sheraton has always stood for that kind of old-fashioned luxury hotel. And this hotel lives up to that nicely with dark wood panels and a more conservative decor than the others.
But then you will still be surprised. For a few of the rooms are decorated in a traditional Thai style with their own penthouse garden and temple pool. They are simply so aesthetic that you feel like moving into their Rama Suite on the 18th floor right away.
Well yes, and then there are regularly cozy jazz concerts that you can come to for free as a guest. Do not call.
This hotel is also rated 4,5 / 5 on Tripadvisor.

Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok
We ate a huge traditional Thai lunch with seafood and fresh juice ad libitum on Four Points by Sheraton Bangkok on Sukhumvit Soi 15.
The hotel is known for its pool parties, and is aimed at younger travelers who want a little more color and music in their lives.
This hotel is on a great 4,4 / 5 on Tripadvisor.

The Westin Grande Sukhumvit
The trip ended The Westin Grande Sukhumvit. The hotel is directly opposite the Sheraton hotel, ie. not just centrally, but absolutely right in the middle of it all.
The Westin is brighter and seems more northern European in its style. The service was more personal and there was almost a touch of coziness, which is otherwise hard to find in larger hotels.
The evening buffet was nothing short of excellent with live music and the pool was quite accomplished. This hotel is at a great 4,3 / 5 on Tripadvisor.

There is no doubt that all six hotels are well-functioning hotels that with a high level of service provide good value for money.
My favorites among the six hotels were Athenee and Westin, although they were quite different. Athenee delivers a complete luxury experience, and the Westin is an obvious choice if a cozy atmosphere and a cool pool matter.
There are thousands of Bangkok hotels, from the most basic for a few kroner per night to luxury hotels, that deliver the goods to that extent. Pay attention to which area the hotel is in, as they are very different. Sukhumvit is a classic, like Khaosan Road is, while there have been several good hotels by the river, as a quieter alternative to the other places.
Good trip to Bangkok, good trip to Thailand.
