Island mentality on Fur

For Copenhageners like us with a camper of older days, Fur was 11 hours transport away. For more efficient and 'direct from A to B' types, it is a somewhat shorter trip. In the Furboers' own words, Fur is 2 minutes away Denmark, which says something about the short ferry crossing, but also about the special island mentality found on Fur.

The island has attracted a lot of creative types, so even though there are less than 800 inhabitants, the island has no less than 20 studios and art workshops! On one of the island's three cycle routes, the 'shop route', we passed a lot of small shops with fine things and all sorts of delicious homemade products. For the more sports-trained, you can also cycle around the island's 28 km or take the 'hill route', where you are allowed to experience the island's hilly nature when you rise from 15 to 70 meters in less than a kilometer. And when you have become tired and thirsty from all that cycling, you can always stop by Fur Bryghus, which offers a wealth of delicious and seasonal beers.

Unique geology

We also made a detour past Fur Museum, where the geyser of the Ødyssé went completely in self-swing over Fur's fossils and special soil layers with volcanic ash that can be traced to 55 million years back.

After getting to know more about history and science, we set out to look at the cases ourselves, namely the cliffs on the north side of the island. And we were certainly not disappointed by the cliffs up to 30 meters high with clear layers of ash.

We stood and looked at the rocks that towered up from the beach and thought: "It can not be Denmark, this". But Fur is also two minutes away Denmark.

Have a good trip to Fur!

About the author

Tine Tolstrup

Tine has a degree in geography from the University of Copenhagen with a focus on environmental management and has a solid knowledge of the Danish natural and cultural landscape, urban development and settlement patterns.
From March to September 2018, she and Sarah Steinitz will explore the island kingdom and travel around to 37 islands in Denmark. It's going to be an adventure. An adventure they call The Odyssey. They are part of a generation that flies around the world after the book "1000 places you must see before you die", but still have never been to Avernakø or driven over Storstrømsbroen. They will seek out the adventures that await around the corner - on Fejø, Fanø, Fur and the 34 other islands that they travel around on their Ødyssé.
