Skiing in Wildschönau

Austria is best known for its ski destinations, when the Danes in the winter enjoy snow safety, Tyrolean music and cold draft beer. Wildschönau is a really good example of a winter paradise for the whole family.

However, Austria is much more than winter, and so is Wildschönau. In summer, the snow-capped Alps turn green, and the cozy villages at the foot of the mountains are an obvious base in this beautiful area.

Where is Wildschönau?

Located in a valley in the middle of Tyrol by the Kitzbühel Alps, Wildschönau includes the church towns of Niederau, Oberau, Thierbach and Auffach. The cities are characterized by family-run hotels and restaurants, where you will be pampered culinary with food from the traditional Tyrolean cuisine.

The towns are also known for its large, beautiful churches, all reminiscent of the area's past.

Go on a treasure hunt and stay in a shelter

The area is perfect for family travel in both winter and summer. For example, children can take part in the hunt for the mythical dragon Tony's treasure, which is hidden in the treasure mountains.

There is a large farm where you can see and cuddle with various animals, while there is also ample opportunity to make bonfires, stay in shelters or play by the river Wildschönauer Ache. For the water dogs, there is a large open-air bath between Oberau and Niederau, where you can unwind in magnificent surroundings.

Postcard-worthy prospects

However, Wildschönau is probably best known for its idyllic walks. There are both child-friendly trips that are less demanding - but there are also tougher routes for those who want a little more challenge.

Common to the tours is that you are guaranteed postcard-worthy views to all sides. If you could do without the hikes, but still want the view from the top of the mountains, you can also take the 'easy' solution and take the gondolas up there. You can find the gondolas in both Niederau and Auffach.

If you want to experience the summer idyll of the Alps, then Wildschönau is a really good offer. Nice trip!

About the author

Stefan Slothuus

Stefan has traveled a lot since childhood - often in France with his Francophile parents. After the student cap was secured, the typical European cultures were replaced with a major excursion with 16 different country visits in just under 5 months, which included Western Europe and Southeast Asia.

Since then, most of the savings next to the study are spent on travel - often to more foreign cultures for cheap money, such as Eastern European destinations can offer. The travel bucket list is almost endless, but travel to Latin America and distant Pacific islands is particularly highly valued.

In addition, Stefan studies Media Science in Odense, loves sports and has probably seen a little more movies and TV series than what is healthy.
