Packing list for the holidays: How to pack like a true travel champ written by Sascha Meineche.

Here are the best package tips

This guide to your packing list is for you who probably think you need your check-in luggage, whether you need 14 more days Thailand, or an extended weekend to Amsterdam. You actually do not have that. At least not always.

After improbably many traveling alone with hand luggage, I have become something of a Nordic champion in packing light – also for a longer holiday. I have found some simple but quite indispensable packing tips, so you can travel like a true champ with hand luggage only – without missing anything. Here is my packing guide.

Roll the clothes when packing

It is good enough. If you roll your clothes rather than putting them down in 'stacks', then there can be much more. And I speak from solid experience.

One can kindly pack for a week in a carry-on suitcase; it's just about the ability to roll it. And of course about the next items on my packing list.

Sort your hand luggage thoroughly

Once you have packed what you think is vital, you can start sorting. You are guaranteed not to need it all - I almost dare to promise you that.

Therefore, always take a little out of the suitcase again. You do not know if there are sales where you go, do you?

Packing list for holidays: Products in travel sizes

This is where it can get a little tricky. At least that's the part that can still challenge me a little even after many years of practice. First of all, consider how important it is for you to have shampoo and conditioner on your packing list.

If you live in a hotel, there is something you can use. If you have to be away for a longer period of time, a small bucket is still not enough, and then it is both easier and cheaper to buy something at the destination.

Travel sizes and miniature editions of your favorite products are your best friends in this case. Your next best friends are small buckets, jars and bottles where you can put a bit of your face cream, your scrub and your shaving foam, so you can have it all with you.

Add sets to your packing list

It might sound a little boring if you have planned your whole thing holiday outfit in advance and made a packing list of everything you need to wear. But in fact, it can save you both space in the suitcase and clothing crises on vacation. Therefore, plan something that can be used in several different situations, and consider whether you really need four dresses or three shirts.

I myself made the same mistake because I thought Athens was a little warmer than the weather forecast predicted. It was not so, and I dragged four dresses with both out and home, which I did not get on. Therefore, it is a good idea if you have something with you that can be used for several different weather situations - something layer upon layer and something you can use for several days.

The same goes for shoes. You do not need the five pairs you have packed, do you? I do not think. Of course you need to have a pair of change shoes or two with you, but four might be just over the top.

Add a tote bag in your carry-on luggage to your packing list

A tote bag does not fill anything in the suitcase, but it is a hit to have on the trip. It can be used for dirty underwear or when you need to shop on holiday and be super eco- and environmentally friendly. It can also be used if you have a little too much on the way home. Then you can just swing it over your shoulder fill it with snacks and an extra sweater.

Bonus tips for your packing list

My extra tip for this holiday packing list is: Always travel in your heaviest shoes, thickest sweaters and biggest jacket. It takes up far too much in the suitcase, and regardless of whether you're going to a hot or cold destination, the temperature on planes is always a little unpredictable.

Therefore, a thick sweater is not a bad idea in higher air layers - it can become your best friend. On the other hand, the extra clothes do not count as extra luggage at the airport - and can easily be put in the tote bag at the airport if it should get too hot.

Remember that it can vary from airline to airline, how many kilos your suitcase must weigh. So research it carefully, because the price of being overweight is really annoying to pay – especially when you just think you've saved money just by taking hand luggage med.

Have fun with your packing list for your next vacation!
