Potsdam: Day trip from Berlin

Germany Potsdam Park travel

Potsdam: Day trip from Berlin is written by Rikke Bank Egeberg.

Berlin's historic neighbor

Berlin is one of the capitals we Danes return to again and again - and with good reason. But have you considered taking a day trip out of town and getting wiser to the surrounding areas? Potsdam can at least be recommended for just this.

From Berlin to Potsdam in 30 minutes

With one of the many train connections you can quickly, easily and conveniently get to Potsdam from the major train stations in Berlin. In just 30 minutes through forest and beautiful landscapes, you arrive at Potsdam Central Station, which is located just outside the historic Old Town.

The city with the many palaces

Around the city and in the surrounding parks you will find palaces. In the 1700th and 1800th centuries, Potsdam was used as a place for the upper class and the German royal family to go on holiday.

If you are historically interested, you can feel everywhere how Frederik the Great of Prussia has had its roof on the city with its great love of Italian art. The walk through the castle park up to the Neues Palais is one must. Here you will pass countless sculptures, orangeries and vineyards and then finally meet the sumptuous summer palace at the end.

All castles are today protected by UNESCO and most of the many houses in the old town are worthy of preservation.

The old winter palace

Potsdam was fortunate and was hardly destroyed during World War II; however, the old winter palace was bombed. From what was left of the castle, they constructed their new parliament, which on the outside resembles the former palace, but inside is modern and functional.

As a little fun tip, it may be advisable to have lunch inside the Parliament; just mention at the ticket counter - where they also offer guided tours - that you are here for lunch.

Experience Potsdam in many ways

The river Havel runs through Potsdam and invites to boat trips where you can see the city from the water side. You can also experience the city on a 'paddleboard' and paddle through the scenic area.

If you are more into having soil under your feet, you can go on many guided walks or bike rides via the local tourist office. They even offer a walk, which takes you into the charming backyards of the old town and tells the story behind.

Remember to visit Potsdam next time you go to Berlin - you will not regret it.
