Catamarca, Argentina: Road trip 28 ° 29 ′ S, 65 ° 47 ′ W is written by Jacob Gowland Jørgensen.

The ultimate road trip is found in Catamarca, Argentina

Argentina is the ultimate country for a road trip. There is a thriving car culture here, and as the locals say: "Here even the poor have cars."

Here you can drive from the world's widest boulevard in Buenos Aires and out on the main road Pan, and 1.100 km later end here in the province of Catamarca with its fascinating desert landscapes.

The provincial capital is called San Fernando del Valle de Catamarca and is probably one of the most beautiful cities in the whole country. It's also one of the warmest - I have my personal heat record from here, 42 dry ° C in the shade on December 24th.

If you are going on a road trip in Argentina, just like in the USA, there is also one Route 66. Here the main road is called Ruta 40. It crosses the province of Catamarca with its more than 5.000 km of roads and runs all the way from the border with Bolivia in the north to Patagonia in the south.

World-class motor racing and national parks

If you are more into off-road experiences, the landscapes of Catamarca are also home to several stages of the Paris-Dakar wild motor race.

Catamarca is an obvious entrance to commendable Unesco sites and national parks such as Talampaya and Valle de la Luna, called the Moon Valley in Danish - which on an Argentine scale are just around the corner, ie 400 km away.

It is recommended from here that you only go on a road trip to Catamarca - if you can live with unique nature experiences, a good infrastructure and few tourists. It's hard not to get excited.
