Visa to England: Now it's not so easy to travel to – and via – the UK is written by Frederik Bregndahl Mikkelsen.

Visa to England? Now you need to remember this before you travel
If you go and dream of a weekend trip to London or the big one football holiday In the UK, it's not as easy as it used to be.
Because now, as a Dane, you need a visa to travel to England. In fact, the requirement applies to the entire Great Britain.
From April 2, 2025, Danes with the beetroot-colored passport and all other EU citizens must have a so-called ETA to travel into Great Britain – exactly as you should when traveling USA.
ETA stands for Electronic Travel Authorisation, and it is a pre-approval that allows you to travel into England, Scotland, Wales og Northern Ireland.
You may also risk having to get an ETA just to be in transit in the UK on a regular stopover, without leaving the airport.
If you are unsure whether you need an ETA for a stopover in the UK, you should contact your airline, as only they know whether it is an 'airside' stopover.
If you want to be on the safe side, you can always apply for an ETA before departure no matter what.
It takes an average of three days to process an ETA application, so it’s a good idea to submit your application well in advance. It costs £10 – around 90 Danish kroner – and if approved, it doesn’t guarantee you entry. You’ll still have to go through border control when you arrive. Just like you normally would.
An ETA also does not mean unlimited entry to the UK forever. You can only be there for a limited period and it is valid for two years, so you should also apply well in advance.
It was already possible from March 5, 2025 to apply for an ETA for the United Kingdom through the UK ETA app or via the official website.
