Corona restrictions: The world is in colour

There are almost as many different ways to deal with corona as there are countries in the world.

Here you will find the sources for the official answers from countries and airlines, and these are always the ones you should go for:

The world: This is the evolution of quarantine, infection rates and entry restrictions

In the end, it is the countries themselves that decide whether they want guests, and there are some of the otherwise popular travel countries that have not wanted to for a while, and where there is a risk of it happening again. Australia is one of the countries that has been closed, but they reopened here in February 2022.

Other popular travel countries found a model for gradual reopening, e.g Thailandthat started with Phuket, and later Khao Lak, Bangkok and a number of other places and now removed all restrictions for Danes. USA is also open to travelers.

From the start, the Danish authorities had chosen to discourage all 'unnecessary' travel to all countries outside Europe and Schengen without looking at the infection pressure in the individual countries. That system has since been changed so that a large number of the world's countries - but not all - are now also marked with color.

If you only need to be in transit at an airport, then you are usually not traveling into the country. If you need to change airports or pick up your luggage to check in again with another company, then different rules may apply depending on where in the world you are.

You can see the corona status for the individual countries in the world by following the links in this article.

Europe: Open and closed borders - quarantine and entry requirements

Europe is generally open to Danes. However, Europe has so far been divided into different colors, and the same applies to regions within the individual countries. In Denmark, we have used green, yellow, orange and red as markings, where green is the most open and without restrictions, and red is the most closed with the most restrictions.

The colors have a bearing on whether you have to quarantine when you return home; however, as a fully vaccinated person, you should not fear being hit by restrictions. The rules for returning home depend on:

1) Your own disease and vaccination situation
2) The color of the region
3) Whether you travel directly and who you travel with

As a starting point, the rules apply for 12 years and up - but not always. Then check the specific rules of the country you are going to.

It is worth keeping an eye on developments right up to departure – and also during the journey – as the entry requirements can change quickly if the number of infections goes up or down. This also applies if the number of infections increases in Denmark, because then (tighter) restrictions may be introduced for Danes traveling to other countries.

The EU, EEA and Schengen countries have joined forces on a common corona passport and common reopening rules, but it is still the individual countries that ultimately decide the entry rules. Therefore, check the individual countries rules and travel instructions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In this context, be aware that the UK is no longer a member of the EU and therefore has its own rules.

As the Faroe Islands and Greenland are members of the Commonwealth, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not make guidelines for this. Instead, you can find the latest the latest updated rules and restrictions on The corona side of the Faroese national doctor og Greenland coronary doctor's corona side.

The most important travel countries: Corona requirements for entry into Europe

Some of the most important travel countries for Danes have special forms that you must fill in to travel in when there are restrictions, which fortunately are not all the time.

Below are links directly to travel guides and forms. Remember to also check the current test regulations where you are traveling to.

More overviews of corona restrictions, entry requirements, vaccination requirements and quarantine

Here are some good overviews. Since it is not from the official sources, you should always confirm the content from an official source, but they can be good to give a quick overview.

Remember to check on each card what the different colors mean, because it can vary slightly.

Important to remember about corona tests, entry requirements and quarantine

Both transit countries and airlines may have requirements for testing and quarantine - regardless of the fact that Denmark, for example, does not - but then the airline will tell you before departure. For example, France and the Netherlands have previously made this requirement.

On a self-drive holiday by car, you must therefore pay extra attention to transit regulations, even if you are not staying overnight. See rules for each country you'll be passing through when you know there are restrictions.

As always, remember travel insurance! If yours doesn't currently cover, you can easily buy one that does, but check with your own insurance to start with.

If you want to make it easy when there are restrictions, this is the way to go: get PCR tested before departure, fill out local entry apps and forms with date and name completely correctly, and fly as direct as you can if you have to fly.

If you want to know more about that travel in corona time you can find more corona guides and articles here, and also check our testing of Southern Europe restrictions.

And have a good trip – it's probably easier than you think once you get going. Everyone wants to help if there are restrictions, which fortunately are not all the time, and certainly not in all places.

Good trip!
