Øresund's Swedish paradise

'My little Swedish paradise' I call the two small twin towns of Falsterbo and Skanør - or Skanör, as the Swedes write it. They are both in Skåne, so it doesn't take much more than a trip across the Øresund to get to these two pearls.

If you also want to visit this paradise, you must drive over the Øresund Bridge to Sweden. When you have turned off towards Trelleborg, you land at a T-junction where the choice is between Skanør on the right and Falsterbo on the left. You start in Skanør.

Skanør - Falsterbo - Sweden - Skanör bikes nature travel

Bike ride in beautiful Skanør

Park the car in Skanør at Hotell Gäslingen. Out front you will find bicycles that you can rent Hirenhoj for a sum of 100 Swedish kroner per day. Rent a couple of good bikes with a basket and start the adventure in this little paradise.

You can cycle along the main street towards the local supermarket, ICA. Behind this you will find Café Stationen, which is a small cozy café with excellent food at modest prices.

If you instead continue 200-300 meters down the main street, you will meet Hotell Spelabäcken on your right, where you can get a simple but delicious breakfast buffet for 70 kroner. A perfect way to start the day in Skanør.

The main street in Skanør consists of charming old pastel-colored houses. At the end of the main street you will find the beautiful Skanør Church, built in the 1300th century and definitely worth a visit. Next door is another hotel, Hotell Gäslingen, which also serves food for non-resident guests.

We like to sit outside by the pool and enjoy the weather and the peace. A very special calm descends upon you when you are in this little paradise.

If you have the dog with you on the trip, it's no problem. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor area at Hotell Gäslingen. On the whole, it is my experience that Sweden is very dog-friendly.

Restaurant and smokehouse at the harbor in Skanør

A short distance from the main street, Mellangatan, is Skanør's marina. It's always busy here, with several small cafes and restaurants, as well as a single smokehouse, which is definitely worth a visit.

The small smokehouse in Skanør is easy to recognise. It is a flat red-painted wooden building with two white chimneys. Just follow the smoke and you will come to the small delicatessen, where you can buy your own food basket to take with you on the bike ride.

The long isthmus out to the harbor is surrounded by the nature reserve Flommen, which is a protected area with many breeding birds and rare frogs. On the cycle path you can cycle along Flommen, which ends at Flommen Golf Club.

It is a beautiful and idyllic trip, and if the calm has not already subsided, it will at least do so on the bike ride through this unique landscape. When you reach the golf club, you are welcome to sit down and enjoy both food and drink.

You can also continue on to your next stop, which is a little further down the road – namely Falsterbo. After 3 more minutes by bike, you reach the town sign for Falsterbo itself.

Beautiful Falsterbo has it all

Falsterbo has it all; boats, a small hotel, church, museum, the outdoor Café Kust – which serves the most delicious prawns on butter-fried bread – as well as Sweden's third-oldest golf course, which is famous among golfers.

At the golf course there is a wide path that leads out to the old lighthouse from the 1700th century. The lighthouse is open on various dates throughout the year and is definitely worth a visit. It's only a short brisk walk from the golf course, but it's a really nice sight when the trip goes to Falsterbo and Skanør.

Beaches and cabins in Falsterbo

Skanør and Falsterbo both have some nice beaches - especially Falsterbo's sandy beach. In both places you will find the beautiful bathing huts in great colors of 2×2 meters that light up the landscape.

In Falsterbo, the cabins are hidden partly behind the dunes 100 meters from the beach and partly inside the small forest near the beach. In Skanør, the cabins are closer to the beach with a beautiful view directly beyond havet.

There is a very rich bird life in the area, and bird lovers make a pilgrimage to Falsterbo in particular twice a year to observe the many migratory birds. If you are lucky, you can spot the kestrels when they are on their nests.

The afternoon can end at Hotell Spelabäckan in Skanør in the associated beautiful backyard. Here, life is made extra comfortable in the shady hammock or in the sun in the large lounge furniture.

The restaurant has a good selection of small delicious cakes, and here too you can enjoy delicious shrimp snacks, which seem to be a specialty in the area.

There are loads of activities happening in Skanør and Falsterbo throughout the year, such as the Falsterbo Horse Show and the Skanör-Falsterbo Market, and it's worth checking out before you go.

The location of the cities by the Øresund also offers a unique opportunity for bird watching and water sports such as windsurfing and kitesurfing, if you are interested in it.

All in all, Skanør and Falsterbo offer a mix of historical charm, natural beauty and exciting events that make them a little paradise that is undoubtedly worth visiting.

Good trip to Skanør and Falsterbo in Sweden - just over the bridge and to the right.
