Glamping is a fusion of glamor and camping - a trendy form of travel that spreads like the heat from the stove in a tent. Take a trip to southern Utah in USA.

Imagine that you have spent the day in the most breathtaking nature. Now you sit and count stars while enjoying toasted marshmallows and a glass of red wine by the fire. Everything is perfect. Just until you come to mind that you have to crawl into a small, dark tent, squeeze yourself into a damp sleeping bag and sleep on a hard sleeping pad.

When happiness is found under a tent cloth

Unless you have checked into Under Canvas Zion, and thus can step into a safari tent, where the aesthetics and a large double bed with soft duvets and clean, white bedding await you.

Usually I am far from the type who seeks out outdoor life that includes words like tent pegs and sleeping pads. Luxury life in hip boutique hotels and zenful yoga treats are more my style. Still, I fell in love when I saw pictures of Under Canvas Zion on Instagram.

A cream-colored tent with wooden floors, crackling fireplace and bathrobes placed on a bed of patinated wooden beams. I clicked into the website and was greeted by a woman who practiced yoga in the open air, surrounded by cacti, red rocks and the most beautiful glow from the sunrise. It did the outcome. During Canvas Zion came on my bucket list during the upcoming road trip in the southwestern United States. I was leaving with my husband and our three children aged 8, 9 and 13.

Just three hours north of Las Vegas

Under Canvas Zion is located in southern Utah about 250 miles north of Las Vegas, and is therefore obvious for a map detour from the blingbling city. Here you will experience nature and the vast expanses without sacrificing comfort. We came from the east after ticking Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and Antelope Canyon, among others.

If you drive along Highway 9, as we did, you will come out on an immensely beautiful route through Zion National Park. Remember to set aside plenty of time as you will need to pass tunnels and zigzagging hairpin bends on the edge of the cliffs. There are many options to stop at viewpoints along the way before ending up in the valley of Zion Canyon.

The Valley of Zion Canyon

In the valley you will find free buses. They drive out to nature's sights in the high season from April to October to provide a better flow for visitors - and not least to minimize pollution. The national park is open year-round and costs $ 25 to access by car and passengers. If you want to visit several national parks, you can invest in an annual pass.

Under Canvas Zion is located at Kolob Canyon on the other side of the park. Along the way, you will come through the town of Springdale, which is surrounded by alluring rock walls and shops with outdoor gear, which is why it also abounds with visitors in hiking boots and click pedal shoes. We were happy to be able to drive on and get closer to the tranquility and nature.

Fight for the sleeping bag

My expectations for the award-winning glamping spot were high. Of course, when naming a Tent Suite, there is already some signal value, right? Yet the images did not at all measure up to the beautiful reality. The tent was huge, and with ample space for two adults and our three children. We adults got a double bed in size xxl with freshly ironed, organic linen. The children shared about a sofa bed and a dream bed. The latter was a struggle because a sleeping bag came with: "Mom, then it's really camping!" they said.

I sank just once and of course had to admit that a tent with shower and wood stove is probably not the standard of a normal campsite. Maybe we should cultivate outdoor life more at all?

Marshmallows under the clearest starry sky

We had only booked a single night in luxury as the price was a bit above our budget on the trip. In return, we had a wonderful day surrounded by wild cacti and warm desert sand right outside the zipper. During the day we walked in the area and read books.

In the evening we went out to a campfire near the tent, which was conveniently already lit. Here was also a basket full of marshmallows, biscuits and Hershey chocolate for free use for S'mores. It was a star moment to feel each other's presence and the sky above us and quietly move in bed to the sound of nothing.

Morning yoga with views of red rocks

The next morning it was cool in the tent. Therefore, I can well imagine that the stove makes quite good sense if you want to stay here in the winter.
I got up as the first and enjoyed sitting out on the patio with a hot cup of tea in the fluffy dressing gown. Usually I love to sleep long on my vacations if the program allows it. But sitting still and feeling the start of the day was wonderful and also needed after many days with many experiences.

My oldest daughter and I borrowed a pair of yoga mats at the front desk. There is a large plateau right by the square where there are free yoga sessions several times a week, but we conducted our sun salutations on our own. Actually, the plateau is built so that the rich from Los Angeles and San Francisco can land with their helicopter when they want to go unplugged from the life and noise of the big city. Such contrasts set thoughts in motion. Has nature become hip? Personally, I am immensely drawn to the concept of the at the same time authentic and comfortable outdoor life and would like to experience it again somewhere else in the world.

Of course it is possible to take one Detox from the luxury life and go out into nature with your own tent. On a car holiday like ours, however, it was valuable not to have to rent or bring all kinds of equipment and to be able to combine different types of accommodation. However, this version will be hard to beat.
