Gdansk hotel check-in: Hotel Arche Dwor Uphagena is written by Jens Skovgaard Andersen.

Old to new – Dwor Uphagena is something very special

Let it be said at once: Arche Dwor Uphagena in Gdansk is not a hotel like any other. Arche specializes in transforming historic buildings into new hotels while retaining as many details as possible from the building's history. That is why the hotel Dwor Uphagena is completely unique.

All over Poland Arche has acquired and rebuilt dilapidated and atmospheric houses and buildings, and more is on the way. As all the hotels are unique and each has its own distinctive character, it does not always make sense to compare them directly with ordinary hotels. Finally, don't let that put you off, because you will find really high quality at Arche.

Dwor Uphagena is actually an old villa that was built by the Uphagena family in what was then the outskirts of Gdansk.

Now it is a delicious hotel full of atmosphere close to the city centre. Precisely because the villa was not located in the middle of the historic city, it has survived the countless bombings that Gdansk has otherwise experienced. The hotel is an obvious base when you visit Gdansk.

Especially if you arrive by car, it is an advantage to look towards Arche Dwor Uphagena. Of course, the hotel has parking spaces for guests, and it is located in a residential area with free parking and surrounded by abandoned factory buildings with hip cafes, restaurants and bars.

It really is a neighborhood worth exploring.

Stay in the middle of history at Dwor Uphagena

The Uphagena family, who built the old villa, were not content to use the villa as a residence. They expanded with a hospital, which was named after the church, which is located in the same building complex. Everywhere in the hotel, the past has been preserved, and this helps to create the unique atmosphere.

In the Maglownia bar stands the hospital's old twisting machine, which was used to twist and dry the bed linen in the hospital's time. By the way, Maglownia is the Polish name for twisting machine, and Arche Dwor Uphagena does a lot to keep the past alive.

The excellent restaurant Stara Kuchnia – 'the Old Kitchen' – is the hospital's old kitchen, and the former royal rifle factory building which houses many of the rooms is aptly named 'Fabryka'.

The rooms are marked with numbers, which are written on the bricks from the buildings' roofs, and in the corridors you see countless historical photos and installations from the house's past.

The perfect hotel in Gdansk – new and modern

The interior design of Arche Dwor Uphagena is also a chapter in itself. Neon lights and modern art meet you in every hallway and every room. The artistic decoration is provided by local artists. Not just from Gdansk, but from the very neighborhood in which Arche Dwor Uphagena is located.

Some of the artwork even comes from artists belonging to it Lena Grochowska Foundation, which is housed in the backyard of Dwor Uphagena and takes care of refugees and people in need. Then it can't get much more local.

It is precisely the mixture of the old and the new, the modern and the historic, that makes Arche Dwor Uphagena a very special place to live. There is plenty to explore without leaving the hotel. Of course, it would be a shame to miss Gdansk's many exciting sights, but a stay at Arche Dwor Uphagena is really a good start.

Pamper yourself and live like an Uphagena

In the old part of the hotel – the villa Dwor Uphagena itself – you can stay in one of the apartments that the Uphagena family themselves lived in when they lived in the house. The beautiful old wooden staircase leads up to the equally beautiful apartments on the first and second floors.

The family lived here themselves, and they even had direct access to the church next door through their own private corridor. The atmosphere is intact; here the coziness factor is really high with soft sofas, free-standing bathtubs and four-poster beds.

When you really need to pamper yourself, take a trip down to the basement to the Remedy spa and wellness department. Here it is easy to forget time and place, once the body and mind completely relax. You mustn't fool yourself about that.

All in all, relaxation and pampering are paramount at Arche Dwor Uphagena. Put a cross on the map and check into a big city hotel you won't soon forget. Enjoy and have fun in Gdansk.

If you are looking for a hotel in the middle of the city with a short walking distance to the railway station and the historic industrial port, then here is a really good alternative

That's why you should stay at Hotel Arche Dwor Uphagena Gdansk

  • The location is perfect if you arrive by car or want to explore Gdansk and the surrounding area in a rental car
