Carinthia is perfect for a camping holiday

If you and the family need to have one on the experience during your summer vacation, it is obvious to set course for Carinthia. Austria southern region is actually absolutely perfect for the summer holidays with warm bathing lakes at the foot of the Alps and plenty of activities to keep everyone going.

And so is Carinthia a really good one camping destination in Austria. The region has over 100 campsites in all kinds of surroundings from farms to mountains - and you can even choose naturist camping if that were the case.

Camping holidays these days are fortunately much more than a sluggish tent with loose ropes; camping are also state-of-the-art motorhomes with built-in freedom, holiday cabins with a cozy guarantee and 'glamping' for the luxury seekers, and then of course there is also room for an igloo tent for those who love to be close to the holiday.

An obvious form of holiday is an active camping holiday, where the heart rate rises a little while the stress level comes down. Cycling, mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, surfing, climbing, canoeing and kayaking can be found everywhere in Carinthia, and the weather on the south side of the Alps, where the sun shines and warms in the fresh alpine air, is ideal for doing something active.

Jump on the water right from the campsite

A very popular activity is canoeing, kayaking or 'stand up paddle' on the river.

Kärnten's longest river is Drava, and here the conditions for getting on the water are absolutely optimal. You can take the whole long and fairly new 'Drava paddling route'- which celebrates its 5-year birthday in 2022 - or divide it into small chunks depending on the energy level.

The bicycle route Large Carinthian Lake Loop - Kärntens Store Søsløjfe - is 340 kilometers long and takes you around between many idyllic lakes such as Millstätter See, Wörthersee and Faaker See.

At several campsites you can almost roll directly out of the tent or caravan and straight down into a canoe. The pitches make packages with accommodation and activities included to make it easy. Check out the Hohe Tauern National Park, for example.

The rivers are also good for cycling, as they are usually fairly flat routes and it is easy to follow the water. For us from flat Denmark, it's nice that it's not mountain driving at all.

When the rivers become wild and steep, there are of course other activities such as 'white water rafting', which offer themselves. Then the adrenaline level also comes up where it can be felt in earnest.

By bike and mountain bike through Carinthia

If the condition is not enough for many hours of hard work in the saddle, you can of course find electric bikes at the many rental places, and you can even arrange pick-up and service at the same time at e.g. Carinthia Rent e-Bike, which has 50 rental stations across the region. That way, the whole family can cycle together, regardless of fitness.

You of course also embark on a more challenging terrain. Carinthia has more than 3000 kilometers of mountain bike routes, and especially the Carnic Alps, Nockberge and Villach are popular with mountain bike riders.

Hiking at all levels

The Alps are made for hiking, and in Carinthia the mountains are easy to deal with without a major mountaineering certificate. If it needs to be really challenging, the 750 kilometer Alpe-Adria long-distance hiking route starts at Austria's highest mountain Großglockner and ends via Slovenia at the Adriatichavet in Italy.

The route is scheduled for 43 days of hiking. The Trails Angels booking center can put together a tour for you if you want to try it all or just a little bit of it.

However, it does not have to be that violent on a camping holiday.

There are lots of shorter and more accessible routes in Carinthia, and many of them actually go right next to the campsites, so it's pretty easy to get started.

The so-called 'slow trails' of up to 10 kilometers do not rise more than 300 meters and fit really well with Danish walking legs and are family-friendly, well signposted and clear.

Then you will be joined by nature guides and experts in the exact area you are in on the nature trip and become much wiser along the way.

Carinthia focuses on accessibility and sustainability

Sustainability is of course paramount when the holiday takes place in close interaction with nature. And it does when camping.

Camping guests usually appreciate that the holiday takes place in an environmentally friendly setting, and as many as four campsites in Carinthia live up to the strict requirements for both the EU eco-label, Austria's own eco-label and the Green Camping certification. These are Camping Brunner, Alpencamp in Kötschach-Mauthen, Camping Rosenthal Roz and Camping Mössler.

If you have your own car, it is of course easy to get around Carinthia, but it is actually also without a car. Trains and shuttle buses runs between the campsites and the train stations and also out to many of the sights. Finally, do not be put off by the fact that accessibility in Carinthia has been considered.

Glamping is high on the agenda

Luxury camping is also called 'glamping', and here too Carinthia can easily be among the best. The region goes to great lengths to offer luxury and new upgraded facilities for your camping holiday.

Glamping tents and glamping cabins with extra luxury can be found at Lakeside Petzen Glamping, which also offers a natural pool, fireplace and wooden sauna, and by Pirkdorfer See is Austria's first Glamping Resort.

At Europarcs Wörthersee in Velden / Auen, they have 'sleeping barrels' for up to four people per piece, and they also have a sauna barrel with room for 10 people. And at Campingpark Burgstaller, children can go to the toilet in a 27 meter long submarine.

Brand new luxury motorhomes with a view of Turnersee can be found at Camping Breznik, while Europarcs Hermagor / Nassfeld offers six brand new holiday apartments at Pressegger See. If you want to reach the very top, you can stay at the HOCHoben in Mallnitz in one of the 18 luxurious cabins with mountain panorama 1200 meters altitude.

No matter what the travel and camping heart desires, Carinthia has something to offer the whole family and all travel friends. It's holiday in the perfect shape, so it's just about getting going.
