Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort: Come home as a healthier human being

I am on Sri Lanka, and sits in a soft chair with a fruit drink in hand. It's not cold, which I will soon find out why.

Because I'm just gotten to one ayurvedic spa hotel, which specializes in helping primarily northern Europeans, become healthier people. They are obviously doing quite well because it is sold out here while all the other places I have visited in Sri Lanka have lacked guests.

Ayurveda is the oldest surviving, complete medical system in the world, in fact over 5000 years old. The word means life knowledge, from the words 'ayur' (life) and 'veda' (knowledge) in Sanskrit. In short, it is about how to create harmony in body and soul, using diets and treatments.

I have never tried Ayurvedic treatment before, but there is no doubt that my winter body and my busy head could use a serious overhaul to that extent. That's why I'm here for a week now.

Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort is part of a local chain of hotels and resorts that focuses on health, grounding and not least Ayurvedic treatments.

I have visited theirs in the past Jungle Retreat, which was such a great experience that I saw what else they could offer and found this place on the south coast of Sri Lanka. Close Mirissa and Galle, two of the most visited places in the country.

Grounding

We go up to my room, which to that extent matches with the philosophy of the place. Here is cozy, harmonious and has an eminent view of the water. The style is probably what you might call "Asian Colonial", with lots of wood, air and warm colors. I immediately feel at home. Perfect.

Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort is located on a fairly large natural plot down towards the beach. I can sit on my balcony with a full view of the trees and enjoy the animal sounds.

The beach is a five minute walk away. It is a beautiful and wild beach where you will be lucky to see the famous fishermen standing on stilts out in the water.

Tranquility and animals

I'm up early. Here you follow nature, up with the sun and early to bed. There is sunrise yoga if you are into it and it looks beautiful and bone-breaking. I'm probably not quite built for it…

There are a couple of monkeys sitting in the trees, looking curiously. They do absolutely nothing and as you approach they jump on. They live here. Like the butterflies, the birds and the lizards that naturally belong here. It is a completely unproblematic relationship, because there is full respect between the species.

My favorite now is the peacocks strutting around the paths and showing off. The males with their beautiful feathers and the females with their cute cubs.

Ayurvedic treatment - all day

Immediately after arriving, you will have a consultation with one of the three Ayurvedic doctors who are here. I sit across from a slender woman who, with a smile and an adult voice, examines my blood pressure, heart rate, and other good things, and hears me about my flaws.

Before the stay, I had asked one of my friends for advice if I should try this. She clearly recommended that I do and I should just tell it all that was now wrong, without fear of sounding like a hypochondriac. Because as she said: "Then they can better assess whether there are any connections in the defects, which they can therefore treat better".

So I did. A sleeping leg, a bad shoulder, dry eyes, muscle tension in the shoulders and a stressed head were noted down. Already there I could see the difference to a regular doctor's visit, where one would typically treat things individually. But not here. Here it is connected.

A cure program at Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort

I was given a cure program that lasted all day. However, the treatments were fixed in the morning from 8-10.30, where I started with acupuncture, followed by oil massage with hot oil, eye moisturizer and steam bath, with my head over a hot tub with herbs in it.

Then the trip went to "Herbal Garden", where you with a view of a herb garden, got warm plant covers and got your face smeared with a mixture of honey and herbs. Then the eyes were covered so that one could enjoy the meditation music. Or sleep a little…

The treatment ended in "Herbal Bath". Here they got all the oil and honey scrubbed off, and were bathed in an herbal bath by a little wrinkled lady who looked to be at least 100 years old. She rinsed one through with the warm herbal water, while one could feel that the skin became completely clean and soft. An absolutely wonderful experience.

All the therapists had complete control over where to go next and what to focus on in particular. It ran like a Swiss watch with a solid once-Senegalese charm and smile on top.

The cure will continue for the rest of the day. There were special dishes and juices for both lunch and dinner, which one could often supplement from a buffet. There were signs on everything so you could know what to skip.

Then there was the medicine for the room. They had to mix different kinds of powder, swallow plant pills and drink some bitter stads, which was obviously good for weight loss, which my doctor thought I needed…

It all came with a daily schedule of what to eat when and whether it should be consumed with acacia honey or with warm water. Right from the morning before breakfast to before bedtime, four times a day.

Too hot water is obviously good for everything in the body, including digestion, and cold water is bad for the same reason, so there were simply no cold drinks in places. Nothing. And you got used to that too. You also sweat less when you drink hot drinks in the heat…

Part of the places were Tech Free Zone, so I deposited my mobile and my camera in the room, and enjoyed that I could get one too tech detox included in the purchase.

Boat trip on Lake Koggala

After a few days at Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort I was going to go out and experience the local area. I found that there were free excursions every afternoon included, so I hopped on a trip with a local museum and a lake.

The trip did not sound very exciting, but when I was leaving, there were also two chirping Portuguese women in their 50s who became the best hiking friends imaginable.

One had been to Barberyn Ayurvedic Resorts every single year for the past 15 years, and knew all about treatments and the local area, and the other was just as green as me. Fantastic.

The local museum was quite interesting because it told a lot about Sri Lanka's colonial history. At Lake Koggola, we were greeted by an old, smiling and incredibly wrinkled man. Together with his son, he sailed tourists out on the beautiful lake, where there were not very many visitors that day.

The cinnamon man on the island without a name in Lake Koggala

There is cinnamon, and then there is cinnamon!

I learned this on my travels in the Indian Ocean, most recently Seychelles. The original cinnamon tree yields cinnamon that makes Netto cinnamon taste like biting into a tree trunk. On a small nameless island out in the lake, the original cinnamon trees grow wild, and here the cinnamon man lives with his family.

He shows us how to remove the outer bark and then scrape a thin layer of wood. Then he looks up and says "Please taste it!". It tastes phenomenal. It is sweet and spicy and with lots of flavor nuances.

I love spices, and when you then discover how it should taste right, it is almost a divine experience in the mouth.

We greet the cinnamon man's sweet family, and return to Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort after a beautiful and warm day.

The people at Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort

The right people in the right place can always make a big difference in one's experience, and so do they here.

At Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort, there are so many friendly, skilled and sincerely smiling people who clearly have a good working life and who want the best for their guests.

If I had been able to take the old wrinkled lady in my luggage, I would seriously consider it, for she was clearly a man with a big heart.

Everyone was obviously keen to make the spa stay as good and easy an experience as possible, and you can hardly ask for more. Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort gets a bell-ready recommendation from here.

Good trip to Barberyn Ayurvedic Beach Resort and good trip to Sri Lanka.
