City contrasts: Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, is a charming mix of French colonial architecture, small street kitchens and lively markets. A stroll around the old quarter reveals narrow streets lined with stalls where you can sample the famous Vietnamese coffee or a bowl of steaming 'pho'.

At the opposite end of the country lies Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. The city was given its current name in 1975 after the end of the Vietnam War as a tribute to the leader Ho Chi Minh, who was one of the most important figures in Vietnam's struggle for independence.

Today, many still use the old name, Saigon, especially for the city's central districts, where modern skyscrapers meet historic buildings that bear witness to the city's dramatic past.

Visit the War Remnants Museum for a moving insight into the history of the Vietnam War or experience the vibrant nightlife on Bui Vien Street. Another fascinating thing about the city is the many shops that sells posters and pictures from a time when Vietnam had to recruit women for the military.

These historical works of art provide a unique insight into the country's resistance struggle and demonstrate the strength possessed by the Vietnamese people.

About the author

Josephine Neckelmann

So far, my best trip of my life has been to Hong Kong. I lived there permanently for four months in a small 8 square meters, with a shared bathroom and kitchen. I think the world is a wonderful place and I love being surprised, learning new things and most of all meeting new people. Gaining new perspectives through new international acquaintances is my absolute reason why I love to travel. In addition, I have a visual storytelling heart, and use my training as a media planner to tell the stories I pick up on the road, through moving images and texts.
