Luxor and the Valley of the Kings

If you were ever in doubt about Egypt's heyday in ancient times, then you just have to visit Luxor. The area is a shining testament to Egypt's magnificent history, and almost feels like a giant outdoor museum filled with wild cultural treasures.

If you are taking a tour of historical sites in Egypt and Jordan, do yourself a favor and add Luxor to the list. Fortunately, it is easy to plan, and there are several round trips, where Luxor is included.

The city was once known as Thebes, and stretches across both sides of the banks of the Nile. Both sides contain incredible historical sites and monuments, so be prepared to be blown away.

Explore the many fantastic temples like another Indiana Jones while surrounded by the mysteries and enigmas of the past.

For example, visit the majestic Luxor Temple in the heart of the city, the Karnak Temple, one of the most extensive temple complexes in Egypt, and the Temple of Hatshepsut, built in honor of Queen Hatshepsut, one of the few female pharaohs.

A visit to Luxor is of course not complete without a visit to the Valley of the Kings, which is a burial chamber for some of the greatest pharaohs from the New Kingdom. The tombs belong to some of Egypt's most famous pharaohs such as Ramses VI, Tutankhamun and Seti I.

In addition to the Valley of the Kings, you can also visit the Valley of the Queens, a burial chamber dedicated to the queens and royal children.

Ashwan - The Nile

Aswan and sailing on the Nile

Further south from Luxor is Aswan, and it is obvious to take a boat trip on Egypt's life-giving heart – the Nile.

There are several round trips where you can combine a trip to Luxor with sailing on the Nile down to Aswan. On such a journey, you pass, for example, the Temple of Horus in Edfu, which is known to be one of Egypt's most beautiful Pharaonic treasures, and the Kom Ombo Temple, located on the banks of the Nile.

When visiting Aswan, it is obvious to explore the Nile, which is considered to be the world's longest river.

In Aswan, you can visit the Temple of Philae, dedicated to the goddess Isis and located on Agilkia Island, as well as visit the Aswan Dam. You can also try felucca sailing in Aswan, sailing on the Nile in traditional, handmade wooden boats with triangular sails.

Cairo: Discover historical sites and ancient Egypt

Egypt's current capital, Cairo, is an almost inevitable stop on your tour of the beautiful historical sites of Egypt and Jordan. Although it is not actually the country's original capital – that was Memphis – the city still offers a wealth of cultural treasures and historical sites.

An obvious stop in Cairo is of course the Giza Pyramids and the Sphinx, which is an incredibly magnificent experience. You can feel the whir of history as you move among these ancient wonders. There are three pyramids at Giza – the largest and oldest of the pyramids is the Cheops pyramid, which you can also enter.

But Cairo offers much more than the pyramids. If you want to delve deeper into ancient Egypt, the Egyptian Museum is a pure treasure trove of archaeological and historical finds. Here you have ample opportunity to delve into Egypt's rich history and culture.

If you want to get your pulse up a bit, you should visit the famous Khan el-Khalili market in Cairo. The market is known for its lively atmosphere, and here you can buy everything from jewellery, spices and textiles to handmade souvenirs and antiques as you explore the maze of narrow streets that the market occupies.

Historical sites in Jordan: The ancient city of Petra

Once you have experienced the amazing historical sites and cultural treasures that Egypt has to offer, it is only natural to extend the journey to beautiful Jordan. And here the ancient city of Petra is undoubtedly at the top of the list.

Petra is one of the seven wonders of the world, and is of course inevitable on the list of historical sites in Jordan. The ancient city of Petra seems almost magical, and you can really feel the whir of history at this UNESCO destination.

The city is carved directly into the red rocks, and when you stand in front of the city, you can almost sense how it once buzzed with life and was a trading hub.

It feels a bit like stepping into another world when you move through the Siq gorge where the city is located. Here you can explore everything from temples and a huge amphitheater to historic burial chambers – all surrounded by the beautiful red-hot sandstone cliffs.

Jordan -

Jordan River, Mount Nebo and Amman

Mount Nebo is also referred to as the Mount of Moses – and it is not entirely by chance. This is where Moses was supposed to have stood and seen the promised land. From the mountain you have a fantastic panoramic view of the area, where in one direction you can see Israel and in the other direction you can sense the Dead Sea.

The mountain has great religious significance for both Jewish, Christian and Muslim pilgrims, and visiting the mountain can be a completely spiritual experience. It is obvious to combine a visit to Mount Nebo with a trip to the Jordan River, which also has great religious significance.

The water of the river is said to be holy. It is here that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist, and it is also this river that the Jews in his time crossed to reach the promised land. Four of the closest followers of the Muslim prophet Muhammad are also buried along the river. The river therefore has great religious significance.

The day can end in Amman, which is both the capital of Jordan and one of the oldest inhabited places in the world. The city has several preserved cultural treasures from the Roman era. Go on an adventure in historical sites such as the Amman Citadel, the Temple of Hercules, the Umayyad Palace, and the Jordan Archaeological Museum.

It is therefore obvious to choose a tour that combines historical sites in Jordan and Egypt, and where you can explore cultural treasures with experienced tour guides.

Really good trip to these amazing, historical wonders in Egypt and Jordan!
